Any history text is subject to historical criticism in order to establish accurate facts and origins, such as: the time, the place in which the text was written, its sources, the events, dates, persons, places and customs that are mentioned or implied in the text.
History is a sensitive and delicate subject that relies on many factors. How many ancient written manuscripts of Blida are in existence? How much of this heritage was protected against theft, negligence and disintegrated through natural causes such as heat, light, inadequate storage, etc. How many preventive measures were there to preserve archives of centuries ago?
Blida’s history should be treated by a recognised academic authority. This will involve a chronological list of historical events, enabling the study of the different timelines of Blida’s history, relying on different, genuine and reliable sources. Different historical accounts or opinions are only accepted as long as they are academically proven.

There is no doubt that a lot of national heritage such as antiques, vestiges, historical artefacts and archives (especially Ottoman-era) have been taken away from Algeria to European libraries and museums; particularly to France by the French colonialist during their presence in Algeria after their invasion in 1830. It is claimed that France has about 50,000 manuscripts and large numbers of national historical artefacts.
Historical criticism
It is important that local notables, particularly from the older generations in Blida and its surrounding areas, academics and national historians are able to write and most importantly, to prove in the best possible way an accurate historical timeline of the town to enable an understanding of relevant and key dates, events, people and places. In recent decades some good voluntary initiatives were undertaken by some local people such as Mr Youcef Ouragui, who felt the need to gather and present Blida’s history. 'Mahlaki ya el Blida' is grateful to Mr Ouragui and many others for all the hard work they have done to present Blida.
‘Mahlaki ya el blida’ is only intending to present information collected from different and numerous sources that relates to Blida’s history. We do not pretend these sources are fully accurate or are historical evidence. 'Mahlaki ya el blida' is not a ‘historical authority’ and would like to apologise in advance for any errors, omissions and would welcome any contribution to present Blida’s history in the best and most accurate way possible.
